Starting a security career in Birmingham is an exciting step, but one of the first questions everyone asks is: “How long until I have my licence in hand?”

The short answer is that the entire process typically takes 6 to 8 weeks, but this varies widely. The timeline is split into two main phases: your preparation and training, and the official Security Industry Authority (SIA) background check.

At Get Your SIA, we guide countless professionals through this journey. We know the key is to be prepared and understand what happens at each stage.

Phase 1: Preparation and Training (The Quickest Part)

The first phase is the only one you can truly control. This is the period from deciding to get licensed to actually submitting your final application.

Step-by-Step Guide: How Long Does It Take to Get an SIA Licence in Birmingham?

Before you even book your course, there’s a vital initial step.

1. Initial Checks and Eligibility (1–3 Days)

Don’t skip this. First, confirm you are eligible (over 18 and have the right to work in the UK). More critically, you must secure a First Aid qualification (like EFAW) before you can start the Door Supervisor course.

This pre-planning is essential. Get Your SIA offers pre-application support to ensure you are ready before you start training, guaranteeing you meet the official prerequisites.

2. Complete Your Course and Get Certified (6–8 Days)

This is the main commitment. The SIA-approved Door Supervisor training course runs over 6 days (usually one week). You’ll learn everything from conflict management to physical intervention.

After you finish the course, there’s a short waiting period. Your training provider needs to mark your exams and issue your certificate, which can take a few days. You cannot apply to the SIA without this certificate.

Phase 3: The Official Application and Wait

Once you have your certificate, the waiting game with the SIA begins.

How Long Is the Wait? SIA Licence Processing Time in Birmingham Explained

The moment you have your training certificate, you can submit your application online on the official SIA website.

1. The Online Submission (1 Hour)

You will create an SIA account and fill out a comprehensive form. Accuracy is crucial here. Any mistake, no matter how small, can send your application back and cause weeks of delay.

2. Identity Verification (1 Day)

After submitting the form, you’ll need to complete an in-person ID check at a participating Post Office branch in Birmingham. This is fast, but you must bring the exact documents specified by the SIA.

3. The SIA Processing Time (4–6 Weeks)

This is the longest stage. The SIA states it takes 25 working days (approximately five weeks) for them to process a complete application. During this time, they conduct thorough criminal record and identity checks.

• Tip: Applications that require further investigation due to complex background checks or time spent abroad can take up to 6 weeks or even longer.

• Training & Certification: 7 days

• Application Submission & Verification: 1 day

• SIA Processing: 25-30 working days (5–6 weeks)

• Total Expected Time: 6 to 7 Weeks (approximately 35–45 days).
